Maharashtra: Show cause notice issued to 53 out of 55 Shiv Sena MLAs, excluding Aditya Thackeray

Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Principal Rajendra Bhagwat has taken unprecedented action and issued show cause notices to 53 MLAs – 39 of Shiv Sena MLAs in favor of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and 14 of Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray’s group, the Times of India reported.

Each camp has been accused of insulting the whip during the speaker’s vote on July 3 and 4 and during the confidence vote, and has demanded that he be disqualified. Aditya Thackeray’s name is not in the list given by Shinde’s camp. Shiv Sena has 55 MLAs.

Bhagwat has issued notices to 53 out of 55 MLAs under the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Members (Disqualification for Secession) Act. MLAs have been directed to reply within seven days.

Shinde won the confidence vote on July 4. In the 288-member assembly (impressive strength of 287), 164 MLAs voted in favor of the no-confidence motion brought by the Shinde-led government, which was more than a simple majority of 144, while 99 voted against it on the last day of the two-day special session of the House. As many as 263 MLAs cast their votes.

Three MLAs were absent, while Congress MLAs Ashok Chavan and Vijay Vadettiwar, both former ministers, along with 20 Congress and NCP MLAs were absent during the no-confidence motion. Acting Speaker Rahul Narvekar did not vote. Narvekar said the confidence motion was passed by a majority.

Ahead of the floor test, Uddhav Thackeray joined the group of Sena MLA Santosh Bangar Shinde from the camp and their number increased to 40.
